U18s continue winning ways
After winning through to the final of the 50-over one-day competition, Somerset Boys Under 18s continued their winning ways when they beat Cricket Wales in the ECB County Cup (Group 2) competition at Newport recently.
Somerset’s eight wicket success was based on a good all round performance which included centuries from Seb Linnitt and Ben Church along with impressive hauls from James Theedom and Archie Vaughan.
After being asked to bat, the hosts were bowled out for 277 in 75.2 overs. opening bowler James Theedom claiming five for 82 from 18 overs, four of which were maidens while off spinner Archie Vaughan took four for 30 from 15.2 overs with three maidens.
In reply, the Somerset innings was given a good start thanks to openers Vaughan and Jay Terry who added 55 for the first wicket.
Linnitt then helped to take the total onto 115 when Vaughan departed for 49 which he scored off 76 balls.
Linnitt then helped add 72 for the third wicket with Thomas Rew, who made 39, and 68 for the sixth wicket with Ben Church, before he was out for 100 which came off 159 deliveries with 11 fours and two sixes.
Church then remained out in the middle sharing a last wicket partnership with Theedom, who made a patient 37 off 64 balls, before Somerset were all out for 415 off 101.2 overs. Church was unbeaten on 111 from 142 deliveries with nine fours and two sixes.
Batting for a second time Wales were bowled out for 181 in 63 overs, Vaughan claiming four for 28 off 23 overs, nine of which were maidens, giving him match figures for eight for 58.
Somerset reached their required total of 44 for the loss of two wickets in the 10th over.
