South Asian Heritage Month: ICC World Cup 2019

South Asian Heritage Month runs from July 18th to August 17th each year.

SAHM seeks to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories, and communities and seeks to understand the diverse heritage and cultures that continue to link the UK with South Asia.

To mark the occasion, we will be posting articles which look back at players and matches that link Somerset with South Asia.

Today we focus on the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup which saw Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh all play at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

The three countries brought noise, colour and passion to Taunton as part of a tournament that captivated the globe right up until the very final ball of the competition.

Afghanistan v New Zealand

Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to field.

Jimmy Neesham claimed five for 31 as Afghanistan were dismissed for 172 from 41.1 overs. Lockie Ferguson also impressed with the ball, claiming four for 37. Hashmatullah Shahidi top scored with 59.

Martin Guptill fell to the first ball of the reply and when Colin Munro departed for 22 in the in the eighth over New Zealand were 41 for two.

However, Williamson (79 not out) and Ross Taylor (48) helped ensure that New Zealand reached their target in the 33rd over to claim a seven-wicket victory.

Australia v Pakistan

Pakistan Captain, Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and elected to field.

He was made to regret that decision when Aaron Finch (82) and David Warner shared an opening stand of 146. However, Mohammad Aamer lead the fightback, claiming five for 30. Warner went on to make 107 as Australia posted a total of 307 all out from their 49 overs.

The Pakistan reply started poorly when Fakhar Zaman was dismissed for 0 with just two runs on the board. Imam-ul-Haq made 53 whilst there were also useful contributions from Mohammad Hafeez (46), Wahab Riaz (45) and Sarfraz Ahmed (40).

However, Pat Cummins took three for 33 as Australia bowled out their opponents for 266 to claim the win by 41 runs.

There were a number of memorable moments on the field during the game, but the fixture is perhaps best remembered for a disgruntled Pakistan supporter who became a popular meme.

West Indies v Bangladesh

After electing to field at the toss, Bangladesh were celebrating early when Chris Gayle was dismissed for a 13-ball duck in the fourth over.

However, Shai Hope (96), Evin Lewis (70) and Shimron Hetmyer (50) ensured that the West Indies posted a competitive total of 321 for eight from their allotted overs.

Tamim Iqbal (48) and Soumya Sarkar (29) shared a 52-run partnership for the first wicket but it was the fourth wicket stand of 189 between Shakib Al Hasan (124 not out) and Liton Das (94 not out).

The pair were outstanding as Bangladesh reached their target in the 42nd over to win by seven wickets.
