Defeat for Somerset Women in local derby

SCORECARD

Gloucestershire claimed the local bragging rights by securing a 165-run victory over Somerset in this 50-over match at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first but Somerset made an early breakthrough when Bea Ellis (8) was trapped lbw by Georgia Tulip in the third over with just 11 runs on the board.

Prarthana Reddy and Rebecca Halliday had advanced the score to 49 in the 10th over when the latter chipped Joleigh Roberts to Nicole Harvey at cover point.

England U19 international and Western Storm keeper/batter Katie Jones came to the crease and made 25 before she was bowled by Ella Stewart at 91 for three.

Reddy was then joined by Chloe Skelton and the pair brought up the Gloucestershire hundred in the 20th over. By the half way stage of the innings the visitors were 121 for three.

Reddy reached her half century from 71 balls, and the 50-partnership for the fourth wicket was achieved from 64 deliveries in the 28th over. The Gloucestershire opener was eventually bowled by Karla Rose for 60 off the final ball of the 29th over at 150 for four.

Skelton’s 50 arrived from 67 balls, as she and Charlotte Phillips shared a half-century stand, bringing up the Gloucestershire 200 in the 40th over. The fifth wicket partnership was worth 77 when Skelton eventually fell for 67, caught on the boundary by Daisy Jeanes off the bowling of Harvey with the score on 227.

Four further runs had been added to the total when Phillips was bowled by Tulip for 25, but Emily Geach and Katie Dolman shared a stand of 58 to ensure that their side finished on 289 for six from their allotted overs.

The Somerset reply started well enough with Harvey and Rose sharing an opening stand of 38 before Harvey chipped Katie Dolman to Rebecca Halliday. 38 for one soon became 44 for two when Daisy Jeanes was run out following a mix up with Rose, and when Jess Hazell fell for four Somerset were 51 for three.

Rose made 26 before she was bowled by Charlie Phillips at 70 for four, and when Emily Edgecombe was run out for 20 attempting a second run off the final ball of the 22nd over Somerset were struggling at 91 for five.

Bhoomika Bhat bowled Ella Stewart and had Neve Kennedy stumped, both in the 25th over to leave the hosts on 102 for seven at the half way stage.

Poppy Hawker was stumped by Jones to give Alice Hill a wicket at 107 for eight and Bhoomika Bhat bowled Joleigh Roberts to leave Somerset on 122 for nine with the writing firmly on the wall.

Tilly Bond was run out off the third ball of the 32nd over to give Gloucestershire a comprehensive victory.
