Somerset CCC partners with Somerset African Caribbean Network

Somerset County Cricket Club and Somerset Cricket Foundation are pleased to be able to announce that we will be working with the Somerset African Caribbean Network throughout the year to celebrate African Caribbean legacy, culture and to promote the outstanding work that the organisation carries out across the region.

The Somerset African Caribbean Network (SACN) are a community and campaigning network based in Somerset for:

  • People of African Caribbean origin
  • The parents/carers of young people and children of African Caribbean origin
  • The spouses/partners of Network Members

The organisation aims to:

  • Connect people from all generations of the African Caribbean community living in Somerset
  • Share experiences of living, studying and working in the area
  • Offer support and information to anyone of African Caribbean heritage new to the area
  • Celebrate, share and promote history, culture and heritage via community events and activities
  • Raise awareness of African Caribbean service, contribution and achievement to Britain
  • Campaign on issues such as criminal justice, education, economic, housing, health and social care reform to ensure the best outcomes for the community
  • Increase understanding and eliminate all forms of prejudice, racism and discrimination

As part of the initiative, SACN will be joining us at the Cooper Associates County Ground for our Metro Bank One Day Cup match against Kent on Friday July 26th.

This will provide Members and supporters with a great opportunity to buy a variety of authentic delicious Caribbean food, in the fan village.  You can also enjoy a rum cocktail!

There will be a specially selected African Caribbean playlist chosen by Bridgwater’s vintage black music historian, DJ Dave Chapple.

In addition to this, there will be a Windrush display in the fan village as well as a display celebrating Somerset’s black cricketers in the Somerset Cricket Museum.

Regarding the partnership, SCCC Commercial Director, Caroline Herbert said: “We are really looking forward to working with the Somerset African Caribbean Network. Viv Richards and Joel Garner are arguably the two greatest players that this Club has ever had, and it is vital that the legacy they created lives on in future generations of Members and supporters.

“It’s not just about the cricket though. We will also be working with the SACN to promote the excellent work that they do across the county with regards to education and promoting equality.”

Susann Savidge, Chair of the Somerset African Caribbean Network added: “We are really excited about this partnership between SCCC, Somerset Cricket Foundation and SACN. We are very proud of the achievement, resistance and resilience of our Caribbean cricketers and their place in Black British History. Our community is very aware of the many challenges they faced coming to Britain from 1948 onwards.

“Cricket has always been very important to the Windrush Generation and their descendants. During times of hardship and struggle there was always cricket to rely upon. Also, the unwavering and unstoppable immense pride and inspiration they felt for their Caribbean cricketers.

“We are honouring the contribution of the pioneering generation of cricketers that followed and their continuation in being genuine and dedicated ambassadors of cricket. Somerset Caribbean cricketers were part of that wonderful legacy.”
