Shane Burger to leave Somerset CCC

Somerset CCC Batting & Assistant Coach, Shane Burger is set to leave the Club this winter.

Shane, who joined Somerset ahead of the 2023 season from Cricket Scotland where he was Head Coach, will be taking up a new opportunity within the English domestic game.

Regarding his decision, Shane said: “I would sum up my time at Somerset with great joy. We’ve achieved so much in the last three years. There’s been growth in the squad and we’ve seen success on the field. To make three Vitality Blast finals in a row and to win two of them is an incredible effort.

“From a red ball perspective, it’s been pleasing to see the growth in the batting and to see the clarity with which the boys are now playing with. It was particularly rewarding assisting Paul Tweddle in the Metro Bank One Day Cup squad and seeing the growth of the younger players in that competition. The exciting thing for me is that I feel that I’m leaving the Club in a really good place. Hopefully, whoever comes in can build on that and take it even further.

“My lasting memories will be of the good people, the great group and the great staff. Everyone has been incredibly supportive from day one during both good and challenging times and I certainly leave with only good memories.

“I would also like to thank the Somerset Members and supporters for the incredible backing that they give the team home and away. I wish Jason Kerr, the players and all the staff the very best for the future.”

Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry praised Shane’s influence during his time with the Club. “Shane has made a significant contribution to the growth and success of both the team and the wider environment during his time with us,” he said. “The professionalism, expertise, and passion he brought to the role not only enhanced the skills of our players but also strengthened the culture and values that define Somerset County Cricket Club. His influence has left a legacy and provided a strong platform for our future success.

“We recognise the exciting opportunity that now lies ahead for him and his family and look forward to welcoming him back to the Cooper Associates County Ground. Everyone at the Club extends their best wishes for his future endeavours.”
