Second XI T20: Banton and Rew see Somerset to big win
Somerset eased to a 10-wicket victory over Worcestershire at Taunton Vale Sports Club in the Second XI T20 competition today.
Tom Banton (85* from 41 balls) and Thomas Rew (90* from 37) shared an unbeaten stand of 181 as the home side chased down 197 in 14.2 overs.
Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.
Isaac Mohammed and Henry Cullen shared an opening stand of 73 before the former was caught behind by Tom Banton off the bowling of James Theedom for 50 from 25 balls.
Cullen was then bowled by Kian Roberts for 20 at 101 for two in the ninth over.
The score had advanced to 124 when the visitors lost their next two wickets. Zach Vukusic and Harvey Richards accounting for Reddy (38) and Lees (3).
124 for four soon became 128 for five when Richards removed Ben Allison (1) courtesy of another Banton catch.
The Worcestershire 150 arrived in the 15th over.
Oscar Coleman dismissed Joseph Eckland for 24 at 162 for six in the 16th over before Jack Home was removed by JT Langridge off the final ball of the 17th.
Theedom claimed two more wickets as the visitors finished on 196 for nine.
Somerset have named the following squad for the match: Fin Hill, Tom Banton, Thomas Rew, Kian Roberts, Ben Church, Theo Lamey, Oscar Coleman, Zach Vukusic, James Theedom, Harvey Richards and JT Langridge.
Banton and Fin Hill had taken the run chase to 16 in the third over before the latter retired out with what appeared to be a leg injury.
Banton, playing his first game since his early return from the IPL, initially dominated the strike with new batter Thomas Rew and the Somerset 50 arrived in the fifth over.
Banton’s half century came from just 23 balls, with Somerset reaching three figures in the ninth over.
The century partnership was amassed off 44 balls and, like Banton, Rew also reached his 50 from 23 deliveries as he began to accelerate through the gears.
The runs just continued to flow and Rew fittingly ended the chase with a big six, one of 13 maximums in the Somerset innings.
