Second XI T20: Defeat for Somerset against Warwickshire
Somerset fell to a 47-run defeat to Warwickshire in the Second XI T20 competition at Taunton Vale Sports Club today.
Play was due to get underway at 11:30am, but rain delayed the start until 12:40pm.
After winning the toss, Somerset elected to bowl first.
Lewis Goldsworthy made an early breakthrough when he took a return catch off his own bowling to remove Hamza Shaikh for 0 at 14 for one.
Isaac Mohammed and George Garton added 32 for the second wicket before the former was bowled by Zach Vukusic for 37. The visitor’s 50 arrived off the fourth ball of the fifth over and by the end of the powerplay the score had advanced to 57 for two.
The third wicket stand was worth 48 when Garton (24) fell at 94 for three in the 11th. That soon became 95 for four, Alex Eckland bowled by Kian Roberts for 1, and then 108 for five when Oliver Dandy, who top scored with 42, was caught by Ben Church off the bowling of Oscar Coleman.
Roberts claimed two more quick wickets to finish with figures of three for 28 but an eighth wicket partnership of 33 between Craig miles and Adam Sylvester ensured that the visitors finished on 168 for seven.
Chasing 169 for victory, the hosts lost Josh Thomas early but fellow opener Will Smeed (28 from 17) gave Somerset hope. However, when Smeed fell at 42 for three off the final ball of the fifth over, the home side were in a spot of bother.
Wickets continued to fall and when Goldsworthy (17 from 13) was run out, Somerset were 73 for six in the 11th over.
The hosts were eventually all out for 121 to give Warwickshire the win with 25 balls to spare.
Somerset have named the following squad: Will Smeed, Josh Thomas, Fin Hill, Oscar Coleman, Lewis Goldsworthy, Blaise Baker, Kian Roberts, Ben Church, JT Langridge, Zach Vukusic and James Theedom.
Spectators are reminded that there is a charge for parking at Taunton Vale Sports Centre.
