Second XI T20: Defeat for Somerset at Taunton Vale

An outstanding individual performance from Alfie Ogborne Couldn’t prevent Somerset from slipping to a 48-run defeat to Northamptonshire in the Central Group of the Second XI T20 competition today.

Northamptonshire won the toss and elected to bat.

The visiting openers made a solid start as Aadi Sharma and Aum Raykar shared a stand of 43 from just 3.3 overs before the former was caught behind for 26 off Ogborne.

43 for one became 49 for two just four balls later when Raykar was caught by Ogborne off the bowling of Migael Pretorius for 17.

By the end of the six-over powerplay, Northants had reached 53 for two.

At the halfway stage of the innings the score had reached 83 for two, and the Northants 100 arrived in the 11th over.

Nic Halstead-Cleak made 43 from 34 balls before becoming Ogborne’s second victim at 136 for three in the 15th over.

The Northants 150 arrived in the 16th over before Freddie Heldreich was run out by Ogborne for six with the score on 188 in the 18th.

Arush Buchake became Ogborne’s third victim without further addition to the score and the Somerset seamer finally removed George Bartlett for 91 at 193 for six. The former Somerset batter’s runs came from just 49 deliveries.

Northants finished on 199 for six from their 20 overs, with Ogborne claiming four for 31, taking a catch and securing a run out.

Chasing 200 to win, Somerset slipped to 36 for two in the fourth over but Andy Umeed and Josh Thomas brought up the host’s 50 in the fifth over.

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and when the returning Sean Dickson fell lbw to Heldreich off the first ball of the 11th over Somerset were 86 for five.

Ogborne top scored with 31 from 17 balls but when Bartlett dismissed Jack Leach to claim his third wicket of the innings Somerset were all out for 151 in the 17th over.
