
Second XI T20: Victory for Somerset at Northants
Somerset beat Northants by four wickets in the Second XI T20 competition at Campbell Park, Milton Keynes today.
Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.
Joe Heywood made the initial breakthrough when David Willey (1) miscued straight to Will Smeed at mid off with just nine runs on the board.
By the end of the six-over poweplay the hosts had reached 36 for one but that became 37 for two when Krish Patel was caught by James Theedom off the bowling of Zach Vukusic for 31 just three balls later.
Ravi Bopara and Justin Broad added 38 for the third wicket before the former England all rounder fell for 20 to the Theedom/Vukusic combination, and when Broad was caught by Vukusic off the bowling of Kian Roberts the hosts were 93 for four in the 16th over.
Dominic Leech was the next batter to depart, caught by Fin Hill off the bowling of Lewis Goldsworthy for two at 103 for five in the 17th over.
Heywood then claimed two quick wickets to leave Northants on 107 for seven with two overs to go.
The final three Northants wickets fell for just six runs as the home side made 113 all out from their allotted overs.
Heywood was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four for 14.
Somerset started the run chase in positive fashion with Josh Thomas racing to 16 from just 12 balls but he was run out to leave the visitors on 19 for one in the third over.
Smeed was then dismissed for a run-a-ball seven at 25 for two in the fourth, but by the end of the powerplay the scoreboard was displaying 42 for two.
Hill was dismissed for 17 at 48 for three, and when Oscar Coleman fell for two Somerset had slipped to 61 for six and were in trouble.
However, Vukusic (36 from 23 balls) and Ben Church (14 from 12) shared a 56-run stand to take Somerset over the line.
