Second XI County Championship: Somerset v Surrey – Day Four
Somerset take on Surrey in the Second XI County Championship at Taunton Vale Sports Club this week.
DAY FOUR
SCORECARD/MATCH CENTRE
Somerset resumed on 31 for one requiring 21 runs for victory.
Will Smeed (36*) and Savin Perera (15*) saw their side to victory by nine wickets.
DAY THREE
Surrey resumed on 21 for one on the third day, trailing by 282 runs.
By lunch the score had advanced to 138 for three, with Alfie Haxton unbeaten on 57.
After the break, Haxton’s century arrived from 203 balls but he was run out for 102 at 226 for four.
At tea the score was 231 for five.
In the evening session, Tim Lloyd went to 50 from 106 balls as the visitors continued to whittle away at the deficit, but he could only add a further nine runs to his tally before being dismissed at 266 for six.
Surrey were eventually all out for 354 and by the close play Somerset had reached 31 for one requiring a further 21 runs for victory.
DAY TWO
Somerset resumed on 130 without loss.
Bertie Michael and Savin Perera continued to pile on the runs and took the hosts to 200 in the 51st over of the match.
Perera won the race to reach three figures, his 100 coming from 164 balls. Michael then reached his century from 171 deliveries.
The Somerset 250 arrived in the 64th over but Michael fell for 107 with the score on 254 which resulted in lunch being taken.
After the break, Tom Kohler-Cadmore was dismissed for eight at 266 for two before Perera went to 150 from 239 balls.
Will Smeed brought up his 50 from 55 deliveries and the 100 partnership for the third wicket arrived from exactly 100 balls.
Somerset went to 400 in the 92nd over and the 150-run partnership came from 160 deliveries.
Perera brought up his 200 from 304 balls as the home side built a sizable lead, with Smeed’s century coming from 111 balls.
Perera’s exceptional innings came to an end when he was trapped lbw for 215 at 471 for three and when Smeed fell for 106 the score was 475 for four.
Somerset eventually declared on 539 for eight.
By the close of play, the visitors were 21 for one, trailing by 282.
DAY ONE
Surrey won the toss and elected to bat.
Alfie Haxton and Nikhil Gorantla shared an opening stand of 37 before the former was caught by Savin Perera off the bowling of Zach Vukusic for 34 in the eighth over.
The score had advanced to 91 in the 20th over when Ollie Sykes fell to Manraj Johal for 10. This sparked a mini collapse as the visitors lost three more wickets for the addition of just six runs to the total.
By lunch the score was 121 for five.
Gorantla and Roan Kelly shared a stand of 73 for the sixth wicket before the latter was bowled by Kian Roberts for 20.
The visitors slipped to 204 for nine, but a 32-run partnership for the last wicket frustrated the home side as Surrey posted a first innings total of 236.
Gorantla finished unbeaten on 133 whilst Harvey Richards was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four for 59.
By the close of play, Somerset were 130 with out loss in reply, trailing by 106.
