Second XI Championship: Yorkshire v Somerset ends in a draw

Somerset’s Second XI County Championship match with Yorkshire ended in a draw at Headingley.

Somerset resumed on 432 for seven on the final day, a lead of 82.

The visitors were eventually dismissed for 489, Andy Umeed making 176.

Dom Bess was the pick of the Yorkshire attack against his old club, claiming five for 136.

By lunch, the hosts had reached 95 for two in their second innings, trailing by 44 runs.

Unfortunately, rain began to fall during the interval and no further play was possible.

The umpires called play off just after 3pm.

Somerset Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis has named the following squad for the fixture: Sonny Baker, Ben Green, Fin Hill, Jack Leach, Ned Leonard, Alfie Ogborne, Thomas Rew, Kian Roberts, George Thomas, Josh Thomas, Andy Umeed and Archie Vaughan.

Day Three

Somerset resumed on 50 for one, trailing by 300 with nine wickets remaining in their first innings.

It was a strong morning for the visitors, with Archie Vaughan and Ned Leonard sharing a stand of 111 for the second wicket before Leonard was dismissed for 54. His 50 coming from 87 balls.

Vaughan and Andy Umeed then saw Somerset to lunch with the scoreboard showing 158 for two.

After the interval, Vaughan was trapped lbw by Mickey Edwards for 61 from 124 balls for the addition of just three runs to the Somerset total.

However, Umeed and Ben Green shared a fourth wicket stand of 144 to take the visitors to 305 but Green fell to the final ball of the 77th over for 66 when he was bowled by Dom Bess. His departure signaled tea with Umeed unbeaten on 73.

The interval was extended after a brief shower, but that didn’t deter Umeed, who reached his century from 151 balls. The Scotland international went on to reach the close of play unbeaten on 154 as Somerset finished on 432 for seven, a lead of 82.

Day Two

After Monday’s washout, play eventually got underway at 11am.

Yorkshire elected to bat first but Alfie Ogborne struck early when he bowled Will Luxton for 0 in the opening over.

0 for one soon became 10 for two when Ogborne had Yash Vagadia (0) caught behind by James Rew in the fifth over.

However, James Wharton and Harry Duke got the home side back on track and by the time the lunch interval arrived Yorkshire had moved to 129 for two.

After the break, the two Yorkshire batters took their partnership for the third wicket to 154 and the score onto 164 before Duke was trapped lbw by Ben Green for 87.

Wharton and Dom Bess then took the hosts past the 200-mark, but Kian Roberts bowled the former for 96 at 202 for four.

Double Nelson then struck when Bess was caught by Jack Leach off the bowling of Archie Vaughan for 27 to leave Yorkshire on 222 for five.

At tea the hosts had moved to 243 without further loss.

After tea, Andy Umeed bowled Will Benninson for 26 at 295 for six before Noah Kelly and Dom Leech took their side past 300.

Ogborne then claimed two more wickets before the hosts declared on 350 for nine. Kelly finished unbeaten on 71 whilst Ogborne claimed four for 50.

By the close of play, Somerset had reached 50 for one in reply. Leach was the batter to fall, bowled by Benninson for 24.

Day One

Play was due to get underway at 11am today (Monday April 15th) but the start was delayed due to rain.

Lunch was taken at 12:30pm and play was eventually called off at 12:51pm.
