Second XI Championship: Somerset v Warwickshire – DAY FOUR

Somerset wrapped up a comprehensive seven-wicket win on the final day of this Second XI County Championship match against Warwickshire at Taunton Vale Sports Club.
Play eventually got underway at 11:30am after morning rain.
Needing 62 for victory, Will Smeed and Josh Thomas set about the visiting attack, taking their side home in just 8.3 overs.
Their partnership was worth 73 with Thomas making 33 not out from 25 balls whilst Smeed finished unbeaten on 93 from as many deliveries.
DAY THREE
Warwickshire resumed on 115 for four on the third day of this Second XI County Championship match at Taunton Vale Sports Club.
Only two runs had been added to the overnight total when Theo Wylie was caught by Kian Roberts off the bowling of Alfie Ogborne from the fourth ball of the morning.
Kai Smith and Craig Miles shared a stand of 89 for the sixth wicket until the latter was caught by Will Smeed off the bowling of Lachlan Rice for 29 at 206 for six.
Smith finally fell for 82, caught by Josh Thomas to give Ogborne his third wicket, and by lunch the visitors were 230 for seven.
Michael Booth made 58 and shared a stand of 70 with Aman Rao but Warwickshire were eventually dismissed for 309. Rice was the pick of the Somerset attack, claiming five for 71.
Chasing 217 to win, Somerset slipped to 11 for two in the fourth over.
Rain brought about an early tea by which point the home side had progressed to 50 without further loss.
After the break, Ben Church reached his 50 from 64 balls and shared a century stand with Will Smeed for the third wicket. He was eventually dismissed for 78 and the partnership was worth 136.
Smeed reached his own 50 from 56 deliveries and by the close of play Somerset were 155 for three, requiring a further 62 runs for victory.
DAY TWO
Somerset resumed on 148 for four on day two of this Second XI County Championship match at Taunton Vale Sports Club.
Josh Thomas and Kian Roberts took their fifth wicket stand to 48 before the former was dismissed for 31 with the score on 169.
Craig Miles then claimed his fourth wicket of the innings when he accounted for Ben Church to leave Somerset on 190 for six. Oscar Coleman became Miles’ fifth victim and when Lachlan Rice fell for one, Somerset were 213 for eight.
Somerset were eventually dismissed for 272 on the stroke of lunch, a lead of 93.
Warwickshire’s second innings saw them reach 29 before Alfie Ogborne remove Zen Malik for 10, Kian Roberts taking the catch. Isaac Mohammed and Chris Benjamin added 39 for the second wicket before former fell for 33, and when the latter was bowled by Coleman the visitors were 68 for three, still trailing by 25.
The Warwickshire 100 arrived in the 21st over and at tea they had advanced to 115 for four. Rain began to fall during the interval resulting in an early end to proceedings.
DAY ONE
Overnight rain meant that play didn’t get underway until 11:30am.
Somerset won the toss and elected to field.
Kian Roberts made an early breakthrough when Isaac Mohammed was caught by Ben Church for two with just three runs on the board.
The score had advanced to 33 in the eighth over when Roberts bowled Chris Benjamin for 24. Alfie Ogborne then bowled Kai Smith in the final over before lunch and the players left the field with the scoreboard showing 81 for three at the break.
After the interval, 81 for three soon became 85 for four when Zen Malik (36) was caught behind off Oscar Coleman.
Roberts claimed two wickets in four balls to reduce the visitors to 127 for six, and when he bowled Theo Wylie in his next over Warwickshire were 128 for seven and Roberts had his five-for.
Warwickshire were eventually dismissed for 179 from 52.1 overs.
Roberts was the pick of the attack finishing with five for 24 from 11 overs, whilst Ogborne and Coleman claimed two each.
The Somerset reply had reached 26 when Sean Dickson (20) was bowled by Ben Blakemore. Bertie Michael and Fin Hill shared a second wicket stand of 69 before the former became the first of three wickets for Craig Miles.
The Warwickshire bowler also accounted for Hill (43) and Will Smeed (6) as Somerset slipped from 95 for two to 121 for four.
By the close of play, Somerset had reached 148 for four, trailing by 31 runs with six first innings wickets remaining.
