Second XI: Cardiff UCCE v Somerset

Somerset beat Cardiff UCCE by 312 runs in this three-day match at Abergavenny CC.

DAY THREE

Somerset resumed on 259 for one, a lead of 340.

Thomas Rew fell for 44 at 275 for two whilst Fin Hill made a run-a-ball 36.

Will Smeed went to his double hundred from 203 balls and was on 209 when the declaration came with the scoreboard showing 392 for three, a lead of 474.

At lunch, Cardiff UCCE had reached 26 without loss.

In the afternoon session, Fin Hill claimed five wickets as the hosts slipped to 143 for eight.

After tea, Somerset dismissed the home side for 161 to win the match by 312 runs.

Hill finished with five for 41 from 17 overs whilst Harvey Richards claimed three for 51.

DAY TWO

Cardiff UCCE resumed on 82 for one.

Kian Roberts claimed four for 56 whilst there were also two wickets apiece for JT Langridge and Oscar Coleman as the hosts were dismissed for 286.

Somerset openers Will Smeed and Bertie Michael then shared an opening stand of 148 before the latter fell for 57.

Somerset finished the day on 259 for one with Smeed unbeaten on 138 and Thomas Rew not out on 41.

DAY ONE

Cardiff UCCE won the toss and elected to field.

Somerset openers Will Smeed and Bertie Michael shared an opening stand of 82 before the latter was dismissed for 32 in the 23rd over.

Smeed reached 50 from 71 deliveries, and by lunch the total had moved to 128.

Smeed and Thomas Rew took the second wicket stand to 60 but the Somerset ‘keeper was trapped lbw for 38 at 142 for two.

Fin Hill was then bowled without addition to the visitor’s total.

Smeed continued onto his century from 131 balls.

Kian Roberts reached 50 from 76 balls but fell five runs later and by tea Smeed and Ben Church had taken their side to 291 for four.

Smeed eventually fell for 148. His runs coming from 189 deliveries.

Oscar Coleman made a rapid 37 but Somerset were dismissed for 367.

By the close of play, Cardiff UCCE had reached 82 for one, trailing by 285.
