Meet the Academy – Theo Lamey

Theo Lamey is a right-handed batter and right-arm fast medium bowler who was born in Torquay.

He describes himself as a batting all rounder, and if he had the chance he ‘would open both the batting and the bowling!’

The tall 15-year-old moved to Taunton aged three and attended King’s Hall School before moving to King’s College, where he is currently in Year 10.

Theo’s love of sport and especially cricket comes from his Dad and older brother. For as long as Theo can remember they have thrown balls at him in the garden and taken him to practice in the nets.

He played junior cricket at Taunton St Andrews from the age of seven. When he was 13, the family moved to Devon where he now plays for Bradninch and Kentisbeare CC.

Theo started to play for Somerset when he was seven years old in the Under 10 age group, since when he has played up through the age groups, invariably playing up a year or two.

His best bowling figures to date for Somerset are 3 for 16 against Worcestershire Under 15s when he was 13, while his best batting for the County Under 13’s is 112 not out against Wiltshire when he was 12.

Theo also played cricket for St Stithians in South Africa earlier this year whilst on a school exchange during which he scored an unbeaten 128 off 62 balls.

In the summer of 2024 he helped Bradninch and Kentisbeare CC win the Devon Premier League about which he said: “We won the league and I batted at number five. It was great to be a part of that team and chip in to help them win some matches.”

What does it mean to Theo to be part of the Academy?

“It’s so nice that all the work so far has paid off. Now I’m onto the Academy the real hard work starts. It will be a great learning curve and hopefully it will improve my game, helping me to gain a contract at the end of my time on the Academy in four years’ time.

“I think being part of the Academy will give me that extra push and a helping hand to get me where I want to be. Working with the coaches here will help me work on the things I need to and sharpen up my game. They are quality coaches and so helpful.”

What is Theo hoping for in 2025?

“I want to score more runs and take more wickets than ever before. This year I scored six hundreds, one for Somerset U15’s, one for Somerset U16’s, two for King’s College and two in South Africa.

“Earlier this year I was invited to the Bunbury festival trials a year young. This was an amazing opportunity for me and I was lucky enough to be selected for the South and West and was also made captain of the team. I would love the chance to go back in 2025 and get a couple of big centuries and put in some good bowling performances.

“I would also like to play some more Somerset Under 18s cricket and get involved with the three-day matches. Hopefully, towards the end of the season I can get some more games for Somerset Second XI like I did last season.”

Looking further ahead, Theo said: “In five years time I’d love to be playing County Championship cricket for Somerset and be out in the middle playing in a Vitality Blast match at the Cooper Associates County Ground. That’s the dream. Cricket is massive here and I just want so much to be part of a winning team.”
