Meet the Academy – Noah Lewis-Jones

Right-arm leg spin bowler and left-handed batter Noah has joined the Somerset academy. He was born in Dubai before moving to England. His family then relocated to Australia before returning to England, where Noah is now a pupil at Millfield School.

How did Noah start playing cricket?

“When we moved to Sydney, I did a lot of sports and I became very interested in cricket,” he explained. “I started off as a pace bowler, bowling seam up and after we moved to Perth, I would sometimes mix it up and bowl spin. I quickly became interested in spin bowling and decided to go with it.”

Noah explained how he became involved with the Somerset Pathway

“I got involved in the trials in my first year back, which was Under 14s but then I was training with the squad for a bit and I got invited to join them.

“I then got onto the EPP that year and from that I got quite a few opportunities including playing at Bunbury. I also played in a few Under 18 games for Somerset and now this year I have come onto the Academy.

“It means a lot to me to have been asked to join the Academy and it means that I have been welcomed in, and I feel like I’m respected.

“I like working with Max Waller on my bowling, and that really helps my development. I also get some sessions working on my batting and fielding, which is a bit of a work in progress.”

How would Noah sum up the 2024 season?

“My most memorable figures came when I was playing for the age groups and I took five wickets for five runs in Marlborough.

“In terms of batting, I was batting against Cornwall with Lucca Gregory and we shared a solid partnership and ended up winning the game from quite a low point.”

Noah explained how much time each week he spends playing cricket.

“I come down to Taunton for three Academy sessions a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. I also have sessions back at school where I work with Tim Simmonite and I also often play cricket at lunchtime as well.

“This year I’m hoping to get to play in the Super 4s and also play a few Somerset Seconds games as well as looking forward to training with Max Waller.”

Looking to the future, Noah said: “In five years’ time I hope to have a contract with Somerset and be playing for the team as much as I possibly can. My dream would be to play for England. Before that I want to play for Somerset but I will be taking it one step at a time.”
