First Legends Wall Player Revealed
We gave Somerset Members and supporters the opportunity to have their say on who should appear on our new Legends Wall, and we are pleased to be able to reveal that Sir Viv Richards will be the very first player to adorn the new and exciting development.
As part of the buildup for our imminent 150th year celebrations, our current Hall of Fame feature is set to be re-imagined as Legends Wall in order to create a more befitting memorial to our greatest ever players.
The West Indian superstar joined Somerset in 1974 and until his departure in 1986 he featured in 191 First Class matches, scoring 14,698 runs at an average of 49.82 with a best of 322 against Warwickshire. During his time in Taunton he amassed 47 First Class hundreds and was a more than useful bowler too, claiming 96 First Class wickets.
Viv was an integral element of Somerset’s Glory Years side which claimed five one-day trophies between 1979 and 1983. Indeed he was the Player of the Match in the Gillette Cup final in 1979 and in the final of the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1981.
He played 218 List A matches for the County, scoring in excess of 7300 runs at an average of 39.94. He claimed 11 centuries for Somerset in one-day cricket with a best of 139 not out, and took 93 wickets with a best of six for 24.
Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards is one of the greatest players to ever play the game and we are proud that he will be the first inductee to our new Legends Wall.
