2025 Metro Bank One Day Cup Squad Announced

Somerset County Cricket Club are pleased to be able to announce the squad for the 2025 Metro Bank One Day Cup.

The team will be captained by James Rew.

Somerset Academy players Thomas Rew, Kian Roberts and James Theedom have been included in the squad.

17-year-old Thomas worked his way onto the Somerset Academy via the Somerset Emerging Player Programme before making his First XI debut earlier this summer in the Vitality Blast. The ‘keeper/batter has captained England at Under 19 level and was named in the PCC Select XI earlier this summer for their match against Zimbabwe during which he scored an unbeaten century in the second innings. He recently signed his first professional rookie contract.

18-year-old Kian, who began his journey on the Cornwall Pathway, is a right-handed batter and right-arm bowler who attends Taunton School and plays his club cricket for Bridgwater CC.

18-year-old seamer James worked his way through the Devon Pathway before joining the Somerset Academy. He plays his club cricket for Sandford CC and attends Exeter College.

Somerset reached the final last year and here is the squad that the Club hope can go one better in 2025.

Ahead of the tournament, Somerset Interim Head Coach, Paul Tweddle said: “The Metro Bank One Day Cup provides us with the chance to create First Team opportunities and enhance the player’s development within a winning culture. It’s vital that we are developing winning cricketers who are able to impact games.

“I believe this squad has what it takes to go all the way. Although the competition takes place within a short timeframe there’s a large volume of cricket during that window. One of our strengths is that we are able to bring in good quality players when we need to rotate. The players are a year older and more experienced and it’s exciting to be able to see how they handle the expectations of representing this Club in a tournament that has played such an important role in the Club’s history.

“The players are aware of the Club’s history in the competition, and from a young age it’s made very clear, even from just walking around the ground and seeing the pictures, that List A cricket has formed a very big part of our history. They even get references to it from players within the current squad who were given their first opportunity in the 50-over competition who are now mainstays in the First Team across all formats. That shows that we have some really good examples of how not only the history of the Club is strong in 50-over cricket but also how it’s connected to people who are currently in the dressing room.

“We’re keen to see how this opportunity aids the development of Thomas, Kian and James and see them operate within the First Team arena and demonstrate what they’re capable of and what their potential ceilings are. It’s an exciting time for us because, although we know a significant amount about these young players, it’s great to see them have the opportunity to step up and put in impactful performances early in their careers.”
