Second XI Championship: Gloucestershire v Somerset – Day Three

 

Somerset take on Gloucestershire in a three-day Second XI County Championship this week at Rockhampton CC.

DAY THREE

LIVE SCORECARD

Gloucestershire resumed on 136 for three on the third and final day of this match, leading by 112.

By lunch, the hosts had advanced to 259 for 6.

In the afternoon session, 77 from Shafi and 62 from O’Donnell saw Gloucestershire reach 372 before they were dismissed. The final wicket saw the arrival of tea. Kian Roberts was the pick of the somerset attack, claiming three for 51 from 13 overs.

Chasing an unlikely victory target of more than 300 in just one session, Somerset reached 186 for five by the time the players shook hands. George Thomas top scored with 71 from 56 balls whilst Thomas Rew added 41 as the match ended in a draw.

DAY TWO

Somerset resumed on 40/4 when play got underway on day two.

Will Smeed and Josh Thomas took the total on to 167, sharing a fifth wicket stand of 127 before the more experienced batter fell for 74. Thomas (89) and Thomas Rew then added 94 for the sixth wicket as Somerset reversed their fortunes with the bat.

Rew went on to make 106 not out as Somerset declared on 343 for nine.

A half century from Ed Middleton helped to ensure that Gloucestershire were 136 for three by the close of play, a lead of 112.

DAY ONE

Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.

Home openers Ed Middleton and Joe Phillips shared an opening stand of 67 before the former was caught behind off the bowling of Joe Heywood for 24. Kian Roberts then accounted for Max Dunne (2) to leave the hosts on 80 for two.

Phillips eventually fell for 84, caught behind of Harry Petrie at 126 for three. Petrie also removed Tom Price (17) but Jack Taylor and Zaman Shafi took the hosts to 231 before Taylor was dismissed to give Roberts his second.

By tea, Gloucestershire were 235 for five.

In the final session Ahmed made 42 and Shaw scored 34 as Gloucestershire were dismissed for 319. Petrie and Roberts both finished with three wickets.

The visitors reply got off to a poor start as they slipped to 19 for three. However, Fin Hill (23) helped to get the innings back on track.

By the close of play, Somerset were 40 for four, trailing by 279.
