Open Trial for Aspiring Women’s Cricketers: Seam and Spin Bowlers

Somerset County Cricket Club is excited to announce that we will be inviting female seam and spin bowlers from across the UK to attend a trial day with the opportunity to potentially join our women’s team. The trials, held at The Cooper Associates County Ground, will allow talented players to showcase their skills and potentially earn a place in the Somerset Women’s squad.

Why We Are Doing This:

We recognise the rapid growth of women’s cricket and are committed to broadening our understanding of the talent that exists beyond the existing regional structure. We want to offer opportunities to players who may not have had the chance to be seen by professional clubs before, or who may have developed later within their cricketing journey. As the talent pool continues to expand, we aim to cast a wider net beyond our traditional South West catchment area. These trials will provide players with a platform to showcase their skills in front of our professional coaching team and potentially take the next step toward a career in professional cricket.

Eligibility Criteria

Please note that to be eligible for the trials:

  • Players must not be currently playing County Age Group cricket.
  • Players cannot be involved in another Tier One Professional team, EPP or Academy.

This trial is intended for cricketers who demonstrate potential but have yet to engage with a formal professional cricket structure.

What We’re Looking For:

Spin Bowlers:

· A bowling action that facilitates spin and maximises energy on the ball.

· Ability to maximise spin with stock deliveries.

· The ability to deceive batters both in the air and off the pitch.

· A desire to spin the ball hard and consistently look to take wickets.

Seam Bowlers:

· A bowling action that facilitates pace

· An ability to move the ball off the seam and in the air.

· Ability to use variations to create indecision in batters and create wicket opportunities.

· A desire to bowl fast and consistently look to take wickets.

How to Apply:

To be considered for the trials, players must submit the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Current Club/County involvement
  • An overview of your background within cricket
  • Video footage of primary skill (preferably in-game)

Please send your application with all required information to Matt Drakeley mattd@somersetcountycc.co.uk by Thursday 7th October.

Once reviewed against the above skills criteria, suitable applicants will be invited to attend the trial day at The Cooper Associates County Ground on Friday 15th November where Somerset’s professional coaching staff will observe players in person. All players that apply and attend will receive detailed feedback on the outcome of their decision.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of Somerset Women’s future and contribute to the growing landscape of women’s cricket. We look forward to receiving your application.
