Matt Henry made an impactful ODI debut against India in January 2014, taking 4/38 and immediately establishing himself as a potent force in white-ball cricket. Over the years, he has been a consistent performer, especially in high-pressure situations. He played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s runner-up finishes in the 2015 and 2019 ICC Cricket World Cups, with his standout 3/37 in the 2019 semifinal against India earning him widespread acclaim.
In Test cricket, Henry has been a dependable seamer, often stepping up in challenging conditions. His career highlight came in 2022, when he took a career-best 7/23 against South Africa in Christchurch, marking one of New Zealand’s most dominant bowling performances.

His association with the club began in 2023 when he was signed as an overseas player for a three-month period. During this stint, Henry’s performances were nothing short of exceptional, solidifying his reputation as a world-class bowler.
In the 2023 County Championship, Henry’s contributions were pivotal. He participated in six matches, claiming 32 wickets at an impressive average of 16.18. His ability to consistently take wickets provided Somerset with a formidable edge in their bowling attack. One of his standout performances came against Middlesex at Lord’s, where he secured a five-wicket haul, leading to Middlesex following on. His figures of 5-45 in that innings were instrumental in Somerset’s dominant position in the match.
Henry’s prowess was not limited to the longer format. In the T20 Blast, he emerged as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, amassing 31 wickets. His consistent breakthroughs were crucial in Somerset’s journey to the finals. In the final against Essex, Henry’s exceptional bowling earned him the Player of the Match accolade, as he took the decisive wicket that clinched Somerset’s first T20 title since 2005.
Recognizing his invaluable contributions, Somerset re-signed Henry for the 2025 season. He is set to be available for the club from 7 April to 25 June, during which he will participate in seven County Championship matches and eight T20 Blast games. His return is highly anticipated, with expectations that he will continue to bolster Somerset’s bowling lineup and contribute to the team’s success in both formats.
