day 1 summary
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Somerset attack vindicated the captain’s decision almost immediately. It was a collective effort that saw Essex bowled out for just 149. The wickets were shared around, including three for Josh Shaw on his Somerset debut.
The second innings raised a few eyebrows. With Tom Kohler-Cadmore sidelined by injury, Somerset opted for a tactical curveball: Jack Leach promoted to open the batting. While he showed his usual grit, his stay was brief, falling for 6. Early wickets left Somerset stuttering, but a determined fightback followed. However, the momentum had shifted again following the loss of James Rew, who fell shortly after reaching a superb 48, and Tom Abell, whose hard-fought 29, which provided much-needed stability.
Just when Essex thought they were back in it, Craig Overton arrived at the crease and completely shifted the momentum. Playing with total freedom, Overton smashed a lightning-fast, unbeaten 50 to punish the tired Essex bowlers. His aggression, supported by Lewis Goldsworthy (28 unbeaten), has propelled Somerset to 179-5 - already holding a lead of 30 runs heading into Day 2.
Squad Update: Smeed is Incoming! There is more good news for the Somerset faithful: Will Smeed is on his way to Chelmsford! He will join the squad tomorrow as a replacement for the injured TKC, adding serious firepower to the lineup for the remainder of the match.
We'll be back tomorrow to provide regular updates.
179/5 CLOSE
Somerset finish strong on 179/5. Overton finished on 50, and Goldsworthy 28. We lead by 30 runs! A good day for Somerset.
172/5 (40.4)
Craig isn't hanging around here, he charges down the pitch and hits another HUGE six! That brings up his 50.
165/5 (40) 50 run partnership
Another boundary from an aggressive Craig Overton brings up the 50 partnership between him and Goldsworthy - how important could this partnership be?
161/5 (39.4) Somerset LEAD
A HUGE six by Overton down the ground gives Somerset the lead! Craig powers to 36 from just 28 balls.
143/5 (38)
Three fours in the over from Overton as Somerset now trail by just 7 runs, with 5 overs remaining in the day.
WICKET: Somerset 114/5
102/4 (26)
James Rew sweeps Harmer for four and that brings up the Somerset 100
94/4 (24)
SHOT! Lovely cover drive from Lewis Goldsworthy gets him off the mark. 18 overs remain this evening but not sure we'll get all of them given the light
82/4 (22)
Slightly overpitched from Snater and James Rew punishes this down the ground with a fine straight drive. He's onto 31 now and it's a vital little period coming up as we creep towards the latter stages of the day
